FlashProject

For my final project in D210 I created a flash animation. I wanted to continue my study of having the viewer experience an environment with very minimal information. I wanted to show someone walking down the street with possibly a song playing on their ipod or in their head. I wanted them to move to the music and to also show how they were moving through their environment. I wanted this to be a small opening into this persons thoughts and this is why I open and close with street noise.

BFA Thesis Show

This week my BFA Sculpture thesis show is on display in the SoFA Gallery. The Gallery is located in the Fine Arts Building on Indiana University's campus. The opening is this Friday 7 to 9pm.

 This show focuses on the organic shapes and patterns that occur in nature that people are unable to view in everyday life. I believe that these  patterns often times go unnoticed but when a person takes a second to look at their surroundings from a different view, that person is able to create a story about the landscape based off of their own life experiences. 

Animation

I found this animation video that is titled "Letter A" by Blu. This particular artist crates videos using the stop motion film technique. He creates drawings on walls, floors, and ceilings in many different environments. Sometimes in the white wall gallery environment and other times out on the street which creates more of the graffiti feel. I like the aesthetic that he uses to create these videos and the remnants of the previous drawings that get left behind in each frame.

Change in project

This past week I added in another part to my dreamweaver project. I have added in more links and some of which show a word blurb that pops up close to where the person is within the website. So now when the viewer clicks on a room that the person doesn't want to go to, sayings such as "That's not my room!" or "Hurry up!" pop up. I feel like this addition to the website makes it a little more interesting and create a better relationship with the viewer and the "person" in the room of this website. 

Web Art Project

I am currently working on a web art piece, which is based off the idea of viewing people in there personal environment and having control over them. The image that is consistent throughout the piece is a blueprint layout to a house. When the viewer clicks on a room there will be foot prints that walk to that room and that will stay there until the viewer clicks on another room to direct the person to go somewhere else.

This past week I visited the SoFA gallery, which is a apart of the Indiana University Art School and there was an exhibition of Digital art. I am currently taking a digital art class and our next project is a web art piece. Therefore I was really interested in looking at examples of web art that had be created by students within the Digital Art program. I found all of them interesting in how they involve the viewer and how viewing the piece becomes an exploration. The piece that stood out to me the most was one created by Jackie Closurdo, titled "All in your Head". When clicking on the screen a java script would appear to make the viewer feel as though they did something wrong or that the piece was now working correctly. Although the script would include sayings such as "Do you understand?", "Can you go back?", and "When will this end?". I thought that this piece was clever in how it made me question myself as a viewer. 

Examples of my work

The following is an example of one of my sculptures that is strongly influenced by patterns that occur in nature, in which I completed this past Fall. This particular piece was created, based on what the surface of leaves look like at a microscopic level.

I am currently working on this same piece in clay and hope to have 13 total for installation. I plan to hang these pieces on the wall creating a rectangular shape. Having more pieces will create a better cell like affect and I think will express my original intent better than  I was able to with only the three that I created in resin.

Abstract Painting

I have found that some of Clyfford Still's (1904-80), paintings are similar to the abstract digital image that I am creating in photoshop for my second project in my Digital Art class. Still was an abstract expressionist painter that created his own style, outside of the prominent movement that was occurring in New York City at the time he was working.

Still created paintings that were full of abstract flowing shapes and he often times created these shapes using a great deal of paint that would create a texture across the surface of the canvas. His painting tilted 1949-A No. 2 is an example of this type of abstract painting. It is very expressionist in how the coarse brush stroke are visible and show the artist hand in the painting. This piece is also an example of how he did not title his pieces because he wanted to leave the interpretation of the piece up to the viewer. I feel like even though the piece is very abstract the use of color and layering of textures creates a space and an environment with voids and holes. In this one particularly there are dark empty areas in the painting and when mixed with the brighter colors creates a sense of space.

 Natali Hromin, a digital artist from Croatia created a series of images titled "Metascapes", which I find very interesting. She uses many images, some photographs of actual places and some of paintings, to create an imaginary landscape. The aesthetic that she uses is very fuzzy and out of focus which make the environment seem as though it is just an illusion. 

First Project in D210 Digital Art: Survey & Practice

In my Digital Art class I am working on my first project, in which I am using photoshop to combine three photographs to create one cohesive and "photo realistic" image. I am cutting and pasting an image of a battleship into an image of an indoor swimming pool and then I will add in images of people also. I want it to seem as though the image was taken from a dream of a swim meet.

Bio

My name is Mary Elizabeth Miller and I was born and raised in Greensboro, North Carolina. I am currently in the last semester of my senior year at Indiana University and will graduate in May with a BFA in sculpture along with a Minor in Art History.  

Through my studies at Indiana University I have developed knowledge of different mediums and have also learned how to look at art and design conceptually. My knowledge of material allows me to create art that is conceptually influenced by material, all while understanding the fundamentals of color and design. I have found that all forms of art (2-D and 3- D) can overlap and influence other forms of art in positive ways and that having an understanding of multiple mediums has helped me to do this in my own work.

Currently, with my art I am focused on patterns that reoccur in nature. I am mostly interested in patterns that seem to appear in many different ways and that are also very repetitive. Through my art I hope to explore how people perceive these patterns and which visual aspects of these patterns overlap the most.
